Stamps

Collecting French stamps has always been very popular with stamp collectors all over the World.  France, with over 2,000 years of recorded history, has had more influence on Western culture than any other country.  And, much of that history has been commemorated on their postage stamps over the past 170 years.

On January 1, 1849, the newly created 2nd Republic of France issued two postage stamps, becoming the 8th country in the World to implement adhesive postage stamps for the prepayment of letter mail.

20th Century commemorative French stamps are considered by many to be the most beautiful in the world.  Most of the commemorative postage stamps of France were engraved on paper of excellent quality, making them miniature "works of art" in their own right.

The country

France (officially the French Republic (French: République française) is a sovereign state comprising territory in western Europe and several overseas regions and territories. The European part of France, called metropolitan France, extends from the Mediterranean Sea to the English Channel and the North Sea, and from the Rhine to the Atlantic Ocean. France spans 643,801 square kilometres (248,573 sq mi) and has a total population of 66.6 million. It is a unitary semi-presidential republic with the capital in Paris, the country's largest city and main cultural and commercial centre. The Constitution of France establishes the state as secular and democratic, with its sovereignty derived from the people.
